Vulcan Clock Tower

This is one of the largest clocks we have constructed to date.
Our brief was to re-construct the clock so as the outward appearance was as the original. The clock was to be electrically driven without a striking mechanism. When designing the clock a great deal of thought was put into its position with the Portsmouth Harbour and to the atmospheric problems caused by the sea air.

The 4 3.4metre (12 feet) dials were manufactured in pitch pine, this material is long lasting and very stable. During construction they were treated with preservatives and the finest quality paint used to give a long life expectancy. The numerials and minute track are raised to give the dials definition and are finished in gold leaf. The hands are manufactured in copper with rear ribbing for strength and internal counter balance weights.

The motion work behind each of the 4 dials has been designed with stainless steel shafts, brass gearing and sealed roller bearings to reduce friction. The shafts were fitted with greasing points and packed with water repellant grease. The motion works are connected to an electrical synchronous mains drive unit. The bevel within the drive unit is manufactured in brass and roller bearings are fitted throughout.
